James Murray Spangler, an asthmatic janitor from Ohio, invented and patented the first portable electric vacuum cleaner in 1908 to combat dust that worsened his asthma. He later founded the Electric Suction Sweeper Company.
Susan Hoover introduced James Spangler’s vacuum cleaner invention to her husband, William Hoover, who saw its potential. Hoover acquired the patent, began production under his name, and renamed the company ""The Hoover Company"" in 1922, establishing it as a leader in household cleaning.
