How to tumble dry your jeans

Jeans are one of the more reliable items of clothing you’ll find in many wardrobes, matching many styles of clothing, whatever the style or vintage. Many of us have our favourite pair of jeans that we’d hate to damage, so it’s important to clean and dry them correctly to avoid any holes or frayed fabric.

It’s particularly worth thinking about tumble drying. Tumble drying can be a tricky process when it comes to denim, so you’ll need to take an extra level of care when throwing your jeans into the dryer – even when using a dryer with a protective drum, like those in Hoover’s H-DRY 500.

To give you a better idea of what you should do when tumble drying your jeans, we’ve put together the following blog to act as a handy guide.

    Can you tumble dry jeans?

Yes, you can tumble dry different brands of jeans – having said that, always check the label of your jeans before you go ahead. Similar to most kinds of clothing, the label should always be the first place you look when you want to see what can be tumble dried and what can be washed on different cycles.

To tell if your jeans can be tumble dried, you’ll want to try to find a symbol of a box with a circle inside it. This is the widely accepted symbol that shows what can be tumble dried.

If the box has dots inside it, these dots will represent the temperature at which you should tumble dry the clothes. More dots mean higher temperatures; fewer dots mean you should keep the temperature dial down. If there are no dots inside, and the box and circle have a cross right through them, don’t put them in the tumble dryer.

How to protect your jeans in the tumble dryer

    • Check and remove lint from the filter
Every tumble dryer will have a filter which gathers lint and dust in a designated lint drawer. Check the manual for your tumble dryer to find out exactly where this is and how you can operate it. Take the drawer out and remove the lint that has gathered there, ideally after every drying cycle.
If you don’t do this regularly, it can build up the temperature inside the drum, potentially causing serious damage to your clothes and creating holes in your beloved jeans.
    • Sort your clothes correctly
It can often get overlooked, but sorting your clothes ahead of putting them in the dryer is an important step that will help preserve your garments for longer, whether they’re jeans, cotton t-shirts or any other material.
The most helpful way of doing this is to separate your clothes into heavier clothes (like jeans) and lighter clothes (like t-shirts). If you do this, you’ll find that the load times will work out better with the different garments – ensuring that your clothes actually will come out dryer and won’t need another go around at a higher temperature.
    • Be careful with temperature
Temperature will be the number one deciding factor into how long your jeans will be preserved if they are regularly tumble dried. That’s why it’s essential to only put them on at the right temperature.
Check the label as we discussed first – remember that the number of dots inside the circle in the box is the key thing that shows what temperature you should tumble dry your jeans at. The more the dots, the higher the temperature.
    • Put your jeans inside out
It’s a smart move, before you put your jeans into the tumble dryer, to turn them inside out. The reason we do this is because the coloured side of the jeans will have less exposure to the harsher temperatures.
These temperatures can make the colours fade faster and it just so happens that turning them inside out will also help speed up how long it takes for them to dry, stopping your from having to run the cycle again and again.

Why you should consider the H-DRY 500

The H-DRY 500 is Hoover’s leading tumble dryer, designed to make drying your family’s laundry quick, energy-efficient and straightforward.

Designed with Heat Pump technology, this dryer recycles air throughout the drum instead of pumping air in and out, which requires far less energy. This gives you savings of up to 40%, and that’s on an already A++ rated appliance – so you know you’re doing your bit to help the planet.

It also features a number of different features to give you more flexibility and effectiveness when drying. These include things like Aquavision, to improve waste water management, anti-allergy functions to remove allergens like pet hair and dust mites, and over 14 programmes for you to choose from.
