How to sanitise towels and bathrobes? Programmes and tips for thoroughly washing towels and bathrobes

It is necessary to wash and sanitise bathroom linen often, because they take in a lot of water and bacteria and are more prone than other fabrics to develop fungus and mould. How to sanitise towels and bathrobes?

Towels take a lot of abuse, although it may not seem like it. You use them to dry yourself after a shower and you’re likely to have separate towels for your kitchen that dry the dishes and complete other chores.

When you’ve been using a towel a few times, it can still seem dry and clean, but it will develop an odour. That’s a sign that your towel needs to be properly sanitized and washed. This includes learning how to disinfect bathrobes which undergo the same duties.

Why and how to disinfect bathrobes?

If you choose not to sanitize your towels and bathrobes then you will be allowing bacteria to build up on them. This bacteria is effectively feeding on the dead skin cells that are left on the towel. When using the towel you can rub the bacteria onto your skin, potentially making yourself ill.

Fortunately, when you learn how to properly sanitize your towels and do this regularly, there are no bacteria to transfer back.

Which washing programme for deep-cleaning bathrobes?

The most obvious way to sanitize your towels is to use a washing machine, this does most of the work for you. But, you’ll need to think about which washing programme to sanitize towels and which washing programme for deep-cleaning bathrobes. You should also be considering which washing programme for deep-cleaning towels.

This is when it helps to know which washing machine is the best because not all washing machines have the right settings for washing and sanitizing towels and bathrobes. Fortunately, you can take care of your garments by choosing one of Hoover's washing machines.

All you have to do is look through the manual that comes with your machine and you’ll find a list of the various programmes on offer. Simply choose the one that allows you to wash these items at a high temperature.

You will need to check the material your towels are made of. Cotton towels and bathrobes can handle hotter temperatures than linen ones.

How to sanitize towels and bathrobes: extra tips to help get perfect results

To make sure you kill all the bacteria and get perfectly fresh towels there are several additional things you can do.

The most obvious is to add a touch of freshness to your laundry with the Concentrated laundry perfume by Care+Protect. This is put into the drawer of your machine and used automatically to create a delightful aroma on your freshly washed towels and bathrobes.

    You can also:

    • Add a little bleach: A few drops of bleach is a great idea to ensure bacteria are killed, especially if you are doing linen towels and can’t use the highest heat setting on your machine. Naturally, while any bleach is fine for white towels, you’ll need a colour-safe bleach for your coloured towels. It will kill bacteria and keep the towels looking bright, like new.  Top tip: if you have hard water make sure you use oxygen bleach instead of chlorine bleach.
    • Remove them straight away: As soon as the towels are washed remove them from the machine and put them in the dryer on the highest setting possible. This will stop them from picking up damp smells and leave them warm and ready to use.
